Tub size pricing

Four sizes,
one craft standard

Every tub we build is cooperage-crafted from clear western red cedar — no shortcuts based on size. The price difference between sizes reflects material and labor, not quality. All sizes are available in natural cedar or shou sugi ban charred black.

5 × 4 ft
2–3 people
From $8,000

Our smallest round tub. Compact footprint — fits most deck spaces. Ideal for couples or a solo soaker who wants the full cedar experience.

6 × 3 ft
2–4 people
From $9,200

Narrower oval footprint. Popular on narrower decks or hillside terraces throughout the Hudson Valley and Catskills.

6 × 4 ft
4–6 people
From $10,800

Our most popular size. Comfortable for families or small gatherings without dominating the yard. The standard recommendation for most residential installs.

7 × 4 ft
6–8 people
From $13,500

Our largest round tub. Built for properties where gathering is the priority — estate decks, vacation homes, and Airbnb properties throughout the valley.

What changes the final number

Factors that affect
your total cost

In 15 years of building cedar tubs for Hudson Valley properties, John Cox has seen every site configuration imaginable. Here is what actually moves the price.

Finish choice

Natural western red cedar is our baseline. The shou sugi ban charred black finish — a Japanese wood-burning technique John Cox applies at the workshop in Tivoli — adds cost due to the hand-finishing process. For modern architecture or Catskill minimalist aesthetics, many buyers consider it worth the premium.

Site access

Most Hudson Valley residential sites are straightforward to access by truck. Hillside terraces, narrow property entries, or elevated decks in Rhinebeck, Woodstock, and similar areas sometimes require a crane or additional crew — adding $300 to $800 to the delivery component.

Electrical panel capacity

A 240V dedicated circuit is required. If your panel has open capacity and the sub-panel is close to the installation site, electrical costs are on the lower end. Older panels in Columbia County farmhouses or historic homes in Hudson sometimes require upgrades — your electrician will assess this during site visit.

Site prep needed

A tub needs a level, load-bearing surface. An existing concrete pad or structural deck: minimal prep cost. A bare slope that needs a compacted gravel base or new concrete poured: $500 to $1,200. We assess every site before quoting and give you an honest recommendation, not the most expensive option.

Optional decking and surrounds

Custom cedar step platforms, wrap-around decking, and privacy screens are quoted separately. They are not required, but cedar decking built to match the tub — also by John Cox at the workshop — is one of the most requested additions on Hudson Valley properties.

Ice plunge pairing

Contrast therapy — alternating between a hot soak and a cold plunge — is increasingly popular with athletes, wellness-focused buyers, and Airbnb hosts. Adding a cedar ice plunge alongside the main tub at the same installation saves on labor compared to a separate install. Most buyers who want one add it to the original project.

The real cost question

Total cost over 30 years
cedar vs. acrylic

Cedar costs more upfront than entry-level acrylic. Over a 30-year period, the math inverts. Most acrylic shells need full replacement once or twice in that window. Cedar does not. John Cox has seen tubs he built in the early 2010s that are still performing as expected — no replacement, just ongoing care.

Cedar hot tub — 30-year total

Initial purchase and installation$9,500–$17,500
Annual water chemistry$150–$300/yr
Seasonal service (2× per year)$200–$400/yr
Re-banding and structural (30 yrs)$500–$1,500 total
Replacements in 30 yearsZero
Estimated 30-year total$23,000–$38,000

Acrylic hot tub — 30-year total

Initial purchase and installation (×2)$14,000–$30,000
Annual water chemistry$200–$500/yr
Equipment repairs (pumps, jets, etc.)$300–$900/yr avg
Shell repairs over lifespan$500–$2,500 total
Replacements in 30 years1–2 full units
Estimated 30-year total$45,000–$72,000

Estimates reflect illustrative Hudson Valley market conditions. Actual costs vary based on usage, electrical rates, and property specifics. The pattern — cedar more expensive upfront, significantly cheaper over time — is consistent across most scenarios.

Common cost questions

Answered by
the builder

How much does a cedar hot tub cost?

A handcrafted cedar hot tub from Hudson Valley Hot Tubs ranges from $8,000 to $14,000 for the tub itself, depending on size and finish. Installed — including electrical, site prep, and delivery — most Hudson Valley projects run $9,500 to $17,500 total.

Is a cedar hot tub cheaper than an acrylic hot tub?

Upfront, cedar can be comparable to mid-range acrylic. Over a 30-year period, cedar is considerably cheaper — no shell replacement, lower chemical costs, minimal mechanical repairs. Most acrylic tubs need replacement at 10 to 15 years. Cedar does not.

What size cedar hot tub should I get?

For most Hudson Valley residential properties, the 6×4 ft (4 to 6 person) is the right balance of comfort and footprint. If you have a small deck or primarily soak solo, the 5×4 ft works well. Larger properties with frequent guests — or Airbnb operators — often choose the 7×4 ft.

Does a cedar hot tub need electricity?

Yes — a dedicated 240V circuit is required for the heater, pump, and filtration. We coordinate with licensed electricians who have worked on our installations throughout Dutchess, Columbia, Ulster, and Greene counties. Your electrician quotes that work separately from the tub itself.

What is included in the installation?

Delivery, placement, leveling, plumbing connection, initial fill, water chemistry setup, and a full owner walkthrough. John Cox and the same crew who built the tub do the installation. Site prep and electrical are coordinated separately with your contractors.

Do I need a permit for a cedar hot tub in New York?

Requirements vary by municipality across the Hudson Valley. Most towns require a building permit for the electrical work and may require a fence or barrier. We advise every buyer to check with their local building department before installation — and we can tell you what's typical in your specific town or county.
